Residence planning

EU residence rights and relocation planning

Before searching for an investor or remote-work visa, check whether your citizenship gives you a different residence route. The official Your Europe portal organises EU residence guidance by situation, including workers, students, pensioners and family members.

Start with citizenship and destination

Record the citizenships held by each household member and the destination you are considering. Use the official guidance that applies to that combination. EU, EEA, Swiss and third-country situations should not be treated as one interchangeable category.

Match the rules to your circumstances

Follow the guidance for your actual situation: employed, self-employed, studying, retired, seeking work or otherwise supporting yourself. Check registration, resources, insurance and family documentation with the destination authority. A move with family members who hold different citizenships needs particular care.

Handle tax residence separately

Permission to live in another country does not answer where you must report income or pay tax. Review homes, work, travel and family ties in both countries. Keep immigration registration and the tax-residence assessment as separate items in your relocation checklist.

Explore programmes by country

40 directory entries across 37 countries. Closed routes, placeholder records and entries without a recorded official source are excluded. A listing does not confirm current availability or eligibility; follow the official source in each profile.

Common questions

Should an EU citizen start with a golden visa?

First check the residence rights that already apply to your citizenship and circumstances. An investment route may be unnecessary for the move you are planning.

Does residence registration settle my tax position?

Do not assume so. Review the destination and departure-country tax rules separately from immigration registration.
